John Columbus "Lum" Teets was born on 1 September 1851 in Barbour, West Virginia.^{5,6,1,7,8,9,10,11,12,3,13} He was the son of Martin Teets and Mary Ann "Polly" Lantz (Lance).⁴ John Columbus "Lum" Teets married Ethalinda Cutright, daughter of Lot Cutright and Isabel (Isabella) Cutright, on 1 June 1871 in Upshur, West Virginia.^{14,15,16,17,18} John Columbus "Lum" Teets married Elizabeth Ann "Malissy" "Lizzie" Starks, daughter of Adam Oliver Starks and Susan E. Jones, on 15 November 1880.¹⁹ John Columbus "Lum" Teets died on 28 August 1939 in "No doctor", Hinkleville, Upshur, West Virginia, at age 87.^6,3,5,7,20

He was buried on 29 August 1939 in Hampton Cemetery, Buckhannon, Upshur, West Virginia.^6,21,5,7

John Columbus and Elizabeth Starks Teets had 8 children that lived to be adults. Cemetery readings indicate that they had 12 children, including 2 sets of twins (only one twin child, Lloyd, survived to adulthood). The cemetery readings identify four children who did not survive.²² He had black hair and blue eyes. He was a tall, slender and very erect even at 88 years of age. A good lumberman and carpenter. Loved acapella singing of church hymns. His favorite was “Roll, Jordan, Roll”.²³

"John Columbus Teets was married twice. His first wife was Ethelinda Cutright. They had 3 daughters. Mrs. Teets died at age 23 -- the children were very young at the time of her death. The girls were Maggie, Lavina, and Naomi (who died as a teenager).

John Columbus then married Elizabeth Starks, from Barbour County, for his second wife. They raised a large family of children." John Columbus "Lum" Teets was also known as John C. Teats.¹⁶ He was Farmer in 1880 in Meade District, Upshur, West Virginia.

Grover Cleveland Teets was born on 11 April 1886 in Upshur, West Virginia.^2,3,4,5,6,7 He was born on 14 April 1886 in West Virginia.^{8,9,10,11,12,13,7,14,15} He was the son of John Columbus "Lum" Teets and Elizabeth Ann "Malissy" "Lizzie" Starks.¹ Grover Cleveland Teets married Eva Grace Hornbeck, daughter of Moses Clarendon Hornbeck and Phoebe Elizabeth "Betty" Boyce, on 9 July 1911 in Upshur, West Virginia.^15,16 Grover Cleveland Teets was buried on 10 July 1950 in Hampton Cemetery, Buckhannon, Upshur, West Virginia.^17,5,8

He died on 10 July 1950 in Weston Hospital, Weston, Lewis, West Virginia, at age 64.^18,4,11,15,8

He had black hair and blue eyes. In later life, was diabetic and suffered from hardening of arteries.
Grover was skilled in the use of plows, mowing machines (horse drawn) and making and repairing all farm tools. He could do some blacksmithing, cut timber and hired saw mill to make lumber for barn building. He was good with livestock. Raised corn, wheat, buckwheat, and cane. Worked in timbering in Upshur and Randolph Counties. Worked in glass factory at Tennerton, WV until it burned down. Worked at Thornhill Lumber Mills at Hampton, WV and farmed at Hinkleville and at Liggett Addition of Buckhannon. Spent early life around Hemlock, WV. Lived after married at Hampton, Tennerton, Lick Run Road, Hinkleville and last years of life at Liggett Addition of Buckhannon, WV.

Religious affiliations: Hampton Presbyterian Church; insisted children all attend church and strict in school attendance.
Belonged to Odd Fellows Lodge as young man. Was member of early school board for Hinkleville Public School District. Could play harmonica and fiddle and liked to sing old songs. Insisted on all family getting an education and having “a good name”. Hard worker and good provider for family. Was skillful in use of herbal remedies and could identify many useful herbs.¹⁴ He registered for the WWI Draft on on 12 September 1918 in Buckhannon, Upshur, West Virginia.⁹

He registered for the WWII Draft on on 27 April 1942 in Preston, West Virginia.¹⁰

It looks like grandma was married before, I’m still trying to find out to who or if her and granddad were running around. She didn’t marry Gilbert Edgar Warner till 1/6/1917 and of course your mother was born in 1913 not sure what this tells us. I also think there was another daughter during that time but she died at childbirth or shortly after.

Yes your Mom was married before she was married to Leo Mayfield before F.W. Ward there were no children from that marriage.

Paul J. Booth, 89, of North Pike Street, Grafton, passed away Oct. 1, 2009, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Ellamore, a son of the late Homer O. Booth and Lela M. (Davis) Booth.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Juanita B. (Demoss) Booth; two brothers, Wayne Booth and wife, Jo Booth, of Calabash, N.C., and Richard D. Booth and wife, Betty Booth, of Buckhannon; and also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Booth served in the U.S. Marie Corps from 1942 to 1945 and he was an accountant for the Monongahela Power Company in Fairmont for 18 years. He was a life member of the VFW Memorial City Post 3081 and served as their former Commander and District Commander. He attended the Blueville United Methodist Church in Grafton.

The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton on Sunday, Oct. 4 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Monday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jeffrey N. Winter officiating.Interment will follow at the Bluemont Cemetery in Grafton.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the VFW Memorial City Post 3081, Taylor County Post 12 American Legion and the D.A.V. Chapter 24 and their auxiliaries.

She was born on 3 March 1890 in Braxton, West Virginia.^{3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11} She was the daughter of Moses Clarendon Hornbeck and Phoebe Elizabeth "Betty" Boyce. Eva Grace Hornbeck married Grover Cleveland Teets, son of John Columbus "Lum" Teets and Elizabeth Ann "Malissy" "Lizzie" Starks, on 9 July 1911 in Upshur, West Virginia.^11,12 Eva Grace Hornbeck died on 2 March 1985 in Upshur, West Virginia, at age 94.^6,13,11,4 She was buried after 2 March 1985 in Hampton Cemetery, Buckhannon, Upshur, West Virginia.^2,4

Eva had black wavy hair, and blue eyes. Self educated and followed world events in newspapers and TV news. Taught Sunday School class for at least 20 years. Very religious and lived her religious beliefs. Finished 8th grade but was self educated and insisted all her children finish high school. Four of her children graduated from college - Louis, Mary, Betty Lou, and Charles. Louie received PhD in Education. Mary received MA in Education and Betty Lou graduated in Pharmacy. Charles was Regional Social Security Director.
When first married, lived at Hampton, WV. Moved next to Tennerton, WV where husband worked in glass factory which later burned. Moved to Lick Run, WV and then to farm at Hinkleville where last three children were born; lived there until last two children were in high school then bought home in Liggett Addition of Buckhannon.

Religious affiliations: United Brethern Church at Hinkleville; West Buckhannon Methodist Church in Liggett Addition of Buckhannon where she taught class and took part in all activities.

Loved and honored by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and all who knew her. Lived until one day before 95th birthday. Never spent a night in the hospital until spontaneous break of hip and hip operation. Recovered from operation then blood clot caused coma and death a day later. Worked hard all her life and lived frugally. Did not believe in owing money. Special project when older was to collect money to see tombstones were erected for graves of all relatives in Hampton Cemetery.¹⁰

Also surviving are a son, Jerry Teets, Warrenton, Va.; a daughter, Linda Gardner, Lyn Haven, Fla.; three grandsons, Guy Teets, Newport News, Va., Adam Gardner and Eric Gardner, both of Lyn Haven, Fla.; a granddaughter, Trisha Scruggs, Ft. Riley, Kan.; and three great-grandsons, Dustin Teets, Germany, and Aiden Scruggs and Cyrus Scruggs, both of Ft. Riley, Kan.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Myron Worchester and Door Worchester.
Mrs. Teets was a homemaker. She was a member of Frank B. Bartlett Post 7, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and a member of Tennerton Homemakers Club. She attended Tennerton United Methodist Church.
Funeral Arrangements: Friends will be received at Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be in the funeral home chapel Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Roger McCormick officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Church Cemetery in Hampton. From 28 Feb 2002.
