... Grain of every sort is very scarce and had our wheat crops been destroyed as was anticipated, starvation would not have been far off. Corn has been selling readily at $1.00 per bu. and I have heard of men offering $2.00 per bu. Some families on the Janawha River have been living without bread for 2 or 3 months. I presume however that as soon as our wheat is threshed the wants of all can be supplied. I omitted when answering your inquiries to say anything about George Nicholas. Geo. had his leg mashed by a saw log and is destined to be a cripple as long as he lives. He was at Jno. Regan's when last I heard of him. Hyso and Laura got the western fever and went to Iowa where they got the real western fever and returned to Virginia.
... Gidion is in Iowa. I received a letter from him recently. He wished me to give your address and give him all the information I could relative to Oregon. He said that he expected to go there soon. He is married to a daughter of Marshall Lorentz, a very respectable lady, and Marshall, as you are doubless aware, married Lucinda Nicholas. They are all in Iowa and may all go to Oregon together.
