Leonard Pouder was the son of Jacob and Mary (Leonard) Pouder. He was born at sea en route to America aboard "The Joyce". His mother died in childbirth and was buried at sea.

He married Margaret Bohn Pouder Everly on Dec 31, 1760 in Frizzelburg, Maryland.

He was one of the organizers of Kreider's Union Lutheran and German Reformed Churches in 1763.

His farm was named 'Spinning Wheel' farm. It was located on Pipe Creek, Carroll County, Maryland.

Leonard and Margaret Pouder had eight children. (Jacob, John Sander, William Leonard, Anna Maria, Catherine, Rachel, Andrew, Abraham)

He signed his will in German on Dec 3, 1776 and it was filed at Frederick, Maryland on Sept 11, 1797. This was about 20 years after his death and about the time his youngest child, Abraham, came of age.

He apparently die of wounds received in the Revolutionary War. He signed his will on Dec 3 1776 and died on Dec 17, 1776.

According to family history, Leonard Pouder was buried on the family farm because the winter was so bad they could not get to the church cemetery. The farm is no longer in the family and the grave must have been moved to the cemetery.

The early spelling of the family name was 'Powder'. Leonard used the name 'Powder' in all church and court house records and signed his will 'Powder'.

    Inscription:
All that is carved into the stone is "1776" with the sevens written backwards.
    E-mail received 2/7/2013 about headstone:
I Am 90 years old and the gt,gt,gt, gt grandson of Leonard Pouder. In 1968 I had the stone removed from Spinning Wheel with the permission of the owner, Sterling Robertson. Prior to that the Maryland coroner attested that no remains were found- the stone had evidently been moved to facilitate farming and was then in the backyard of a new house. The work was done by Matthias Memorials in Westminster and included transferring a symbolic bucket of soil . Leonard ( who had been born at sea in 1730) had pledged to Kreiders in 1763 and the cemetery agreed to accept the stone. After his death in 1776 his widow, Margaret Bohn, married John Everly. Room was found next to her grave and I had bronze plaques made for Margaret and Leonard.
