  4. [S707] Find-a-Grave, http://www.findagrave.com, Charlie Kenning
    Birth:      Mar. 28, 1850
    Schwerin
    Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany
    Death:      1926

Charlie was born with drive and determination. He arrived in America in 1853 with his parents Henry and Fredricka (Dammann). After brief periods in Buffalo, NY and Toronto, the family settled in Chaska, MN in 1858 where Charlie's dad was a contractor and also where his parents died; father in 1881 and mother in 1900.

As a boy, Charlie worked each summer for J A Dunkle, a barge operator. Charlie's job was as ox teamster, to drive an ox team. During the US-Dakota War of 1862, Charlie was in the midst of the fighting. At 12, he stayed with his animals in the field while indians attacked around him until his oxen were taken by the soldiers to carry supplies into battle.

When Charlie was a young man, he followed his father and became a contractor. He also aided in the development of Chaska's Fire Department.

Henrietta Schraan married Charlie on Sept 23, 1869 and the couple had five children before Henrietta died in April, 1885:
Henry C. born 10 Aug 1870 of Catawba, WI
Charles born 6 May 1870 of ND
Ida born 18 August 1875 (Mrs Gustaf Worsech) of WI
Henrietta born 5 April 1877 (Mrs Valentine Schoot) of Hinckley, MN
Anna born 14 Nov 1879 (Mrs Godfred Schoot) of Hinckley, MN
Louisa born 31 Dec 1884 (Mrs Lee Mack) of Crookston, MN

He moved west to Renville county in 1878 and settled on 320 acres for a short time before he sold it and purchased 160 acres in Osceola township and later increased his ownership to 640 acres in two sections.

His diversified crops are complimented with cattle, sheep, swine, and Percheron horses along with a farm implement business.

After his first wife, Henrietta died in 1885, Charlie married Louisa Ehrenberg (born 10-16-1866 in Germany) on Sept 10, 1885. The couple had the several children together:
William born 12 Feb 1887 of MN
Louis born 28 Sept 1888 of MN
    Frederick born 3 Feb 1891
    Edwin born 27 June 1893
    Alice born 7 Sept 1896
    Arthur born 26 July 1898
    Mabel born 13 April 1891
    John born 25 Dec 1904
    Alfred born 3 Oct 1908
    Milton born 24 Aug 1910
    Merten born 24 Aug 1910

As with Carver county, Charlie is involved with Renville county organizations including assistance in starting
the Old Settlers' Association of Renville County,
    School District 110,
Clover Leaf Creamery Association of Osceola Township
    State Breeders' Association.
