  3. [S707] Find-a-Grave, http://www.findagrave.com, Jeanne Leslie Vassar Garton
    Birth:      Oct. 10, 1923
    Lewis County
    West Virginia, USA
    Death:      Dec. 28, 2007
    Lewis County
    West Virginia, USA

Jeanne Leslie Garton was born in Weston, a daughter of the late Arthur Leslie Vassar and Ethel Jones Vassar, and graduated from Weston High School. With the exception of a brief period working as a secretary in Washington, D.C., during World War II, she has been a lifelong resident of Lewis County. She loved Lewis County and all its residents. She was a true West Virginian in every sense of the word.

In addition to raising seven children, Jeanne was involved in several entrepreneurial business ventures within Lewis County. Four businesses, operated in partnership with her beloved late husband Joe Garton, who preceded her in death on March 27, 1987, included a dairy farm, a chicken farm, a strawberry business and the start-up of what is now a thriving Lewis County business, the G.J. Garton Insurance Agency. While associated with the insurance agency, Jeanne was a licensed agent and former president of the corporation.

The dairy business and the chicken farm both claim recognition for pioneering and innovation. For example, the dairy gave us Lewis County's first use of artificial insemination, and the chicken farm received international attention in the 1950s for the use of music in hen houses to boost egg production. A delegation from Japan visited the Garton farm to view the operation first hand.

In 1992, Jeanne independently launched yet another start-up which became Lewis County's first full service travel agency. Those of us who utilized the services of Lake Country Travel experienced first hand the personalized attention Jeanne gave each of her clients. We were saddened when, in 1998, Jeanne decided to sell the business and take a break from her hectic work pace and international travels.

Jeanne's ongoing involvement with civic affairs can best be described as passionate. She was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church. She was a long-term member of the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, and while serving on the Board of Directors, was distinguished by her peers as a lifelong member of the board. She was also a faithful WVU football fan.

The subject of Jeanne's greatest civic passion was the old Weston State Hospital; specifically, how to preserve its rich heritage and leverage its architectural beauty for the betterment of the County and State. Jeanne's contributions in this regard were tireless and involved contact with many prospective investors, including Donald Trump. She has inspired hope and the belief among us that anything is possible with positive mental attitude, effort and commitment.

Jeanne is survived by her seven children, Jan Garton Collins, Julianne Garton, Jeff Garton, Jeannine Garton Thompson, Jon L. Garton, Joshua Garton and Jeremy Garton. In addition, she is survived by fourteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one sister, JoAnn Eskew. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews; and her two best friends, sisters-in-law, Catherine Roberts and Opal Garton.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Ave., Weston. A wake service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at Saint Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Jeremiah McSweeney as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the Fairview I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Berlin.

Boyle Funeral Home, Weston, is in charge of arrangements.
