Christian Teats1

M, b. circa 1790
RelationshipSon of Henry Teets
ChartsHenry Teets, b. b1760 Indented Descendant Chart
Christian Teats was born circa 1790; he appeared many times between 1811 and 1818 in the Tax Records for Monongalia County (before 1818), and later in Preston County in 1842-1844 but not after that (see Teets in Tax Records). His father Henry and several of his brothers also appeared in these records. He does not appear in the Tax Records for Preston County between 1819 and 1841, indicating that he possibly did not live in Preston County during that time.

Christian presumably appears in the 1800 and 1810 census records with his parents Henry and Mary. He could not be found in the 1820 census as a head of household, even though he was in the Tax Records in 1811, 1815, and 1818. In the 1830 census for Preston County, he appears as "Christopher Teats", age between 30-40. In 1850 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, there is a Christopher Teats age 60 with wife Mahala and family, putting his birth data at c1790. Finally, in 1860, he and Mahala are in the census of Bracken County, Kentucky where his age is stated as 55. Obviously, these ages conflict, yet the family appears to be the same family (in spite of the fact that their birth states (Pennsylvania) appear to be incorrect. Using the 1830 census, he wouild have been born between 1790 and 1800. So, discarding the 1860 age of 55, the 1930 and 1850 census rexords indicate a birth date of c1790, so that was chosen until other evidence can be located. His birth location remains unknown.3,4,5,6,7,2 He was the son of Henry Teets and Mary (?)2 Christian Teats married Mahala Burch, daughter of Thomas Burch and Mary M. "Maria" (?), circa 1829 in Preston, West Virginia.1,8

He was probably one of the (an unknown value) males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Henry Teats, in the 1800 Federal Census of Sandy Creek, Allegany, Maryland.3 The "Muster Roll of Captain Leonard Cupp's Company" from what is now Preston County, in service in 1812, shows Christian Teets, Michael Teets, Adam Teets, and Jacob Teets. This record is seen in Wiley's "History of Preston County."9

She died as a result of childbirth in 1894, and he died in 1905 in Louisville, KY as a result of a brain injury. His father was Christopher Teets and his mother was Mahala. My brother was Lemuel Ogle (Buddy) and he was born on 8/5/45 in Thomasville, GA.(I told him there were two bombs droppd that day, lol). He passed away 4/23/2004. Joe, I can’t tell you how awesome it is to receive your e-mail! I have searched for years for the parents and family of James W. Teets, my great-grandfather. My grandfather was Wesley Porter Teets. He was born, I believe November 8, 1886 in Falmouth, Kentucky. His first marriage, to Mary Evans, ended in divorce after the death of their child. I believe they married around 1903, and divorced around 1910. He enlisted in the Army, and was stationed in Texas City, Texas, where he met my grandmother, Josie Ann Jones. They married December 13, 1913. Grandpa died in November of 1873, here in Houston, and is buried in the Houston National Cemetery. Their children were/are: Virgil Wesley Teets b. 11/5/1918 Oklahoma, d. 6/71 Nacogdoches, Texas; Gladys Lorraine Mattes b. 1/7/1922, Texas City, Texas, still living in Houston; Alethia Virgina Bruner b. 2/28/1924, Texas City, Texas, still living in Houston; Arnold Fredrick Teets, b. 2/19/1925, Texas City, Texas, d. 9/17/1984 buried in Houston.

John Teets has a website that lists the history of the Teats/Teets and I believe it lists Christopher/Christian as being the son of either Michael or Adam Teats.

I look forward to hearing from you again, soon.

Thanks so much for sharing your information!
