He was Protestant by faith, a member of the National Rifle Association and an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman.
Surviving is his wife of 46 years, Frances F. (Baker) Stansberry; two sons, David Dee Stansberry Jr., of Inwood, and Brian Keith Stansberry Sr. and wife, Kelly, of Keyser; four brothers, Howard Philip Stansberry, Jerry Lee Stansberry Sr., James Thomas Stansberry and Robert Gene Stansberry, all of Morgantown; and six grandchildren, Briana Stansberry, April Stansberry, David Stansberry III, Kelly N.
