HALLOWELL -- William C. "Bill" Raynes Jr., 80, of Choate Lane and formerly of Augusta, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, following a brief illness.

He was born in Augusta on Nov. 4, 1927, the son of the late William and Dorothy (Cox) Raynes.

Mr. Raynes was a graduate of Cony High School, attended Gates Business School and served in the Army following World War II. He married Theresa Jeanne d'Arc St. Amand in 1948. Together, they shared their love of children, travel and visiting with many friends and family members. Bill retired from Maine state government in 1988 with more than 25 years of service.

He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, where he volunteered on many occasions with his longtime friends. Bill was also an avid golfer and member of Western View Golf Course, where he enjoyed the company of his many golf buddies. Most of all, Bill loved his family. He enjoyed spending quality time with all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa; son, John; and a grandson, Joseph Proctor.

Mr. Raynes is survived by four daughters, Rhonda Woodward and her husband, Lloyd "Chuck," of South Gardiner, Karen Beggs and her husband, Michael, of Gorham, Dawna Lopatosky and her husband, James "Tony," of Augusta, and Lynn Quirion and her husband, Peter, of Augusta; a sister, Patricia Dolan, of Vacaville, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Shana Boynton, John Fuller and his wife, Leeann, Christopher Coffin and his friend, Sarah Blovet, Theresa Luke and her husband, Jeremy, David Proctor, Elisabeth Altshuler, Anthony Lopatosky, Kirsten Lopatosky, Hayley Quirion, Emily Quirion and Lindsey Quirion; four great-grandchildren, Samantha Vintinner, Kasey Boynton, Haley Fuller and Brianna Luke; several sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Manchester.
