Michael Teets1

M, b. circa 1791, d. before 1830
RelationshipSon of Henry Teets
ChartsHenry Teets, b. b1760 Indented Descendant Chart
Michael Teets was born circa 1791; he appeared many times between 1811 and 1829 in the Monongalia (before 1818) and in the Preston County Tax Records (see Teets in Tax Records). His father Henry and several of his brothers also appeared in these records. He presumably died before 1830 as Elizabeth appears as a head of household in the 1830 census. Elizabeth also appears in the Tax Records between 1830-1833, further supporting this theory.

He seems to appear in the 1800 and 1810 census records, which when combined indicate a birth date between 1790-1794. Michael shows up for the first time on the 1811 Tax Records list, and is married November 2, 1811 to Elizabeth Miller. Michael is between 26-44 in 1820, and apparently dies before 1830, as there are no other census records where he appears. Morton's "History of Preston County" states that Michael "drowned 1850". This could easily be a typo. His wife Elizabeth is 61 in 1850, giving her a birth date of 1789. Based on the census record age range, and birth dates of siblings, Michael's birth date was chosen to be 1791. His is birth location remains unknown.2,1 He was the son of Henry Teets and Mary (?).1 Michael Teets married Elizabeth Miller, daughter of George "Oil" Miller, on 2 November 1811 in Shenandoah, Virginia.3 Michael Teets died before 1830; his last appearance in the Tax Records of Preston County occurred in 1829. His wife Elizabeth, however was in those records between 1830-1833 implying that she was a widow at that time.4,3,5,6
Michael Teets, Jr. volunteered, along with Adam, Christian, and Jacob Teets, and joined Captain Leonard Cupp's Virginia Militia in 1813. They took part in the regiments 400-odd mile march to Fort Meigs at the rapids on Maumee River (now the city of Toledo, Ohio) which was beseiged by British and Indians.

Michael Jr. drowned when he was about 65 years of age while crossing the Cheat River in high water. As it was at the time, superstitions had the victim buried at the place where they were found, so Michael was buried on the island at the mouth of Muddy Creek.6 Michael Teets was also known as Michael Dietz.3

He was probably one of the (an unknown value) males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Henry Teats, in the 1800 Federal Census of Sandy Creek, Allegany, Maryland.7 The "Muster Roll of Captain Leonard Cupp's Company" from what is now Preston County, in service in 1812, shows Christian Teets, Michael Teets, Adam Teets, and Jacob Teets. This record is seen in Wiley's "History of Preston County."8

Will was in the Early 1830's. With this information it proves Michael drowned in 1829 0r 1830 Instead of 1850 As everyone has on their genealogy work. In 1837 Elizabeth sold the land from the will and she was remarried to a John Markley. They wouldn't Let us copy the will because it was so old. Phyllis.

Adam Teets

M, b. circa 1789, d. 1865
RelationshipSon of Henry Teets
ChartsHenry Teets, b. b1760 Indented Descendant Chart
Adam Teets was born circa 1789; he appeared many times between 1807 and 1849 in the Monongalia (before 1818) and in the Preston County Tax Records (after 1818). His father Henry and several of his brothers also appeared in these records (see Teets in Tax Records).

While Adam seems to appear in every census between 1810 and 1860, his age was explicitly shown as 61 in 1850, and his age was explicitly shown as 73 in 1860. Using this information, his birth date is calculated to be between 1787 and 1789. Using the 1800-1810 census records makes it more difficult to calculate a birth date (range calculated was 1795-1799 which does not match up with the ages stated in 1850 and 1860). In another source, the biography of Alpha Teets, his son, in the "McDonough County, Illinois History Book" states that Adam was born in 1790. Using these sources, 1789 was chosen as his birth date. His birth location remains unknown.2,3,4,5,6,7,8,1 He was the son of Henry Teets and Mary (?).1 Adam Teets married Elizabeth Mosser, daughter of Nicholas Mosser and Magdalena Dellenback, in 1813.8 Adam Teets died in 1865.
Adam Teets was also known as Max Teets.9 Adam Teets was also known as Adam Teats.10

He was probably one of the (an unknown value) males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Henry Teats, in the 1800 Federal Census of Sandy Creek, Allegany, Maryland.11 The "Muster Roll of Captain Leonard Cupp's Company" from what is now Preston County, in service in 1812, shows Christian Teets, Michael Teets, Adam Teets, and Jacob Teets.      Elizabeth Mosser was born on 13 July 1793 in Maryland.3,4,5,6,7,8 She was the daughter of Nicholas Mosser and Magdalena Dellenback.1,2 Elizabeth Mosser married Adam Teets, son of Henry Teets and Mary (?), in 1813.8 Elizabeth Mosser died after September 1870; Elizabeth appears in son Levi's 1870 census records, which conflicts with a death date of 1869 from other sources. It appears from that census that she died after September 10, 1870, probably in Preston County.7,8

Biography from McDonough County Illinois History Book [specific source unknown]:
"Alpha Teats, a farmer of Industry Township, was born March 3, 1831, in Preston County, West Virginia. His parents were Adam and Elizabeth (Mosser) Teats, who were likewise natives of West Virginia. His father was born in 1790, and his mother, July 13, 1793. Their marriage occured in 1813, and the former died in 1865 and the latter in 1869. Alpha was brought up on a farm and received his education as opportunity offered in the common schools, working hard during the summer months on the farm. He remained with his parents, engaged in the various duties incident to the farm life, until 22 years old, and then worked out by the month for about 3 years. He then came west, and first lived with Nathaniel Scott, in Chalmers Township, of this county, about two years, working by the month. Subsequently, he worked for other parties until 1860. Upon the 6th day of March of that year, he was married to Mary Vail, daughter of John Vail, Of Industry Township. By the union five children ---- Lucinda, born August 1, 1861; Adaline, born July 16, 1864; Nancy L., born September 24, 1865; John E., born January 23, 1868, and died August 21, 1869; and Bertha S., born January 18, 1877. Mr. Teets is now engaged in general farming and owns a farm on section 8, Industry Township, which is fairly well improved. Himself and wife are members of the Christian Church. Politically, he has always been a democrat."

John Teets1

M, b. circa 1795, d. after 1860
RelationshipSon of Henry Teets
ChartsHenry Teets, b. b1760 Indented Descendant Chart
John Teets was born circa 1795; he appeared many times between 1815 and 1840 in the Monongalia (before 1818) and in the Preston County Tax Records (see Teets in Tax Records). His father Henry and several of his brothers also appeared in these records.

John appears in the 1820 census in Preston County (under name Teater), and in 1850 and 1860 census where it shows that he is 65 in both of those census. There is no way to determine if either of those records are correct. His first appearance in the Tax Records was 1815. So, with no better source available, the author chooses to use a birth date of 1795, and birth location remains unknown.2,3,4 He was the son of Henry Teets and Mary (?).1 John Teets married Margaret Wolfe, daughter of John Jacob "Mountain Man" Wolfe Jr. and Christina Eva "Eve" Wetzel, in 1814.5,6 John Teets died after 1860.7
He was probably one of the (an unknown value) males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Henry Teats, in the 1800 Federal Census of Sandy Creek, Allegany, Maryland.8

ChartsHenry Teets, b. b1760 Indented Descendant Chart
Mary Teets was born circa 1789; it appears that Mary was in the 1800 and 1810 census records with her parents. Mary's death record shows that she was 68 when she died in September 1857 in Preston County. That information leads to a birth date of c1789-1790. 1789 was used, and the birth location remains unknown.1,3 She was the daughter of Henry Teets and Mary (?).1,2 Mary Teets married John Wetzel "Wobby" Wolfe, son of John Jacob "Mountain Man" Wolfe Jr. and Christina Eva "Eve" Wetzel, circa 1813 in Rockingham.1,4,5 Mary Teets died on 7 September 1857 in Crab Orchard, Preston, West Virginia.1,3,6,7
She was probably the female age 10 to 15 listed in the household of her father, Henry Teats, in the 1800 Federal Census of Sandy Creek, Allegany, Maryland.8

RelationshipDaughter of Henry Teets
ChartsHenry Teets, b. b1760 Indented Descendant Chart
Elizabeth Teets was born between 1790 and 1794 in Virginia; in the 1850 census, Elizabeth is stated to be 40; the author believes this is incorrect. In the 1860 census, Elizabeth is widowed and age 65, which seems more accurate and implies a birth date to be between 1790-1794.1,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 She was the daughter of Henry Teets and Mary (?).2,3 Elizabeth Teets married George Wolfe, son of John Jacob "Mountain Man" Wolfe Jr. and Christina Eva "Eve" Wetzel, between 1810 and 1820.11 Elizabeth Teets died after 1860.10
