Stephen Stansberry1,2

M, b. 2 August 1803, d. 8 August 1854
Stephen Stansberry was born on 2 August 1803 in Monongalia, Virginia.5,6,2,7,1 He was the son of Francis "Fran" Stansberry and Mary Brown.3,4 Stephen Stansberry married Sarah Sapp, daughter of Joseph Sapp and Sarah "Polly" Pride, on 17 December 1826 in Monongalia, (West) Virginia.8,1 Stephen Stansberry died on 8 August 1854 in Monongalia, Virginia, at age 51.4,1 He was buried after 8 August 1854 in Smithfield, Monongalia, Virginia.9
According to "The History of Monongalia County", Stephen Stansberry was born in 1803, married Sarah Sapp in 1826, and raised a family of fifteen children, eleven of whom are still living. Mrs. Stansberry and two of her sisters - Mary Pride and Elizabeth Trippett - had families which aggregated fourty-five children.10 Francis Stansbury came from New York about 100 years ago. His son Stephen settled in Clinton District about 57 years ago, and married Sarah Sapp; children - Joseph, Mary, Francis, Sarah, Henry, Jonathan, Stephen, William,
Elijah, Samuel, Ellen, Nathan, Jona, Delia and Maria L.
Joseph, Francis and Maria L. now reside in the district.11 According to a letter written by his grandson John Luther Stansberry on February 8, 1939, "Stephen and Mary Stansberry were our Great Grandparents." [editor's note: it is this statement that led to the idea that Francis Stansberry was also known as Stepen or Stephen]. "They settled on what is called the Smith Farm near the Stansberry Cemetery, probably about 1790 or shortly after. They owned twelve to fifteen hundred acres of land. They died about 1835, and started the cemetery. Sandstones mark their graves. Your grandmother (Hannah), your brother, Willie Mead, your father Wesley, and your cousin Moses Kincaid all have marble slabs to their graves. There is not over 25 or 30 graves there. My grandmother Sarah was the last one buried there in 1878. The cemetery has a wire fence around it and Elery keeps it cleaned. I have paid him some on it a time or two. It's on his farm."12
